This is one of the reasons why Nguyen Dus "The Tale of Kieu" is such an important piece of literature. It is an epic poem, not unlike the epic poems
of ancient Greeks and Romans in terms of offering a look at history, that truly speaks of a culture that most people merely brush aside. Interestingly enough, many may well
argue that "If Shakespeares work represents the greatest literary achievement in the English language, then Nguyen Dus 3254 line masterpiece, The Tale of Kieu, can be considered the pinnacle of
classical Vietnamese literature" (Cam, 2004). The following paper examines the importance of this particular work as seen through the critiques of several different authors. The Tale of Kieu
In understanding the importance of Dus work we must understand something of the history involved in the writing of this epic tale. The general religion of the Vietnams people
relied heavily on the concepts presented by Confucius. He taught people that "you must be loyal to your king-no matter what. Nguyen Du and his family had benefited a lot
from the former Le Dynasty, which explains why Nguyen Du was unwilling to join the new government" (The Tale of Kieu: Vietnams Epic National Poem: "Truyen Kieu," 2004). He felt
that it was actually an act of disloyalty to the previous king and, as a learned man, Du "was afraid of being disregarded by the people of his time and
