interesting, there was a battle with Barclays to gain the bank; the battle was complicated with offers that were made up with a high level of stock which meant the
values of the offer would fluctuate day by day. Both banks perceived benefits associated with acquiring ABN Amro which fitted in with their strategies in order to increase value for
shareholders and place them in a stronger position. Barclays and Royal Bank of Scotland are both following expansion strategies, in order to appreciate the issues of the acquisition the
specific issues should be considered looking at what occurred and when, with this background considerations may be undertaken to assess the way that each bank though that they would be
able to create value. The outcome can then be compared to the projected outcome, however, this will be limited as acquisition can take time to realize value and at the
time of writing this paper it has been less than a year since the acquisition took place. Barclays is an international bank, in April 2007 Barclays agreed on a
merger deal with ABN Amro. The merger looked to be a good fit; Barclays are a large bank and have undertaken acquisitions and mergers in the past. The offer made
by Barclays was worth ?45 billion (US $91 billion) at the time (Investment Dealers Digest, 2007). However, within two days a rival, and higher bid, valued at ?50 billion (US
$98.5 billion) was made by a consortium which was led by The Royal Bank of Scotland (The Evening Standard, 2007; Investment Dealers Digest, 2007). Joining the Royal Bank of Scotland
(RBS) in the bid was Banco Santander, the bank which had acquired the UK Bank Abbey National and Fortis (Investment Dealers Digest, 2007). ABN Amro stated that they were
