is a symbol of renewal and life, and so on. We could choose virtually any ceremony for this paper, but well take a look at the Hindu marriage ceremony because
its something unusual. Discussion The Hindu marriage ceremony is rich in tradition and very detailed. The day before the wedding, the palms of the brides hands and her feet are
decorated with "Mahendi," a red dye which is applied in intricate patterns (Mahendi and Peethi, 2003). Also, on the day prior to the ceremony, a canopy, known as a "mandapa,"
is decorated with flowers and "erected at the place the ceremony will be performed (Mahendi and Peethi, 2003). On the day of the wedding, both the bride and groom
participate in various bathing rituals at their own homes (Mahendi and Peethi, 2003). First, their bodies "are anointed with tumeric, sandalwood paste and oils, which cleanse the body, soften the
skin and make it aromatic" (Mahendi and Peethi, 2003). They are then "bathed to the chanting of Vedic mantras" (Mahendi and Peethi, 2003). The ceremony itself is very long and
complex, and comprises 13 separate steps, each performed in accordance with Vedic tradition, and each symbolizing some aspect of the life that is to follow the ceremony (The marriage ceremony,
2003). The first step is the "Baarat," a procession in which the groom and his family and friends arrive for the wedding, and are greeted by the brides family and
