actually discussed forthright. It is alluded to and conversed around. And, throughout this we are presented with the symbolic nature of a white elephant. In the following paper we examine
the story, discussing the symbolic nature of white elephants within the story. White Elephants When we think of white elephants we think of something that is no use
to us anymore. We often hear of "White Elephant Sales" which are nothing more than garage sales where people bring their unwanted items. This sets a very powerful foundation from
which we can examine the symbolic nature of the story for when we pay attention we note that something within the story will be greatly unwanted and also likely discarded
like an item that is of no use. One author notes that "The story told here is that of a woman and a man in their trip to a place
where she can have an abortion. Everything in the tale is related to the idea of fertility and barrenness" (Olmos). This provides us with the reference point from which we
can see that the Hills, which the man remarks are like White Elephants, "refer to the shape of the belly of a pregnant woman, and White Elephants is an idiom
that refers to useless or unwanted things. In this case the unwanted thing is the foetus they are going to get rid of" (Olmos). In this we see that the
child that could be born is of no use to these people, or perhaps more specifically, is of no use to the man. The woman has doubts. We see
