Essay / Research Paper Abstract
This is a 3 page paper discussing the use of the unlikely character of The Misfit to symbolize Christ in Flannery O’Connor’s “A Good Man is Hard to Find”. In Flannery O’Connor’s “A Good Man is Hard to Find” she uses unlikely characters to portray Christ through the use of symbols and narrative “Christology” or insights. In an ironic twist to the reader, rather than use the likely figure of Father Flynn to explore the inner revelations of Christ’s life in its application to the storyline, O’Connor instead uses the unlikely character of The Misfit who is an escaped criminal and murderer. The Misfit’s character and narrative not only allow him to become an interpretive symbol of Christianity but he also becomes a comparative symbol to Christ in that through his narratives he is able to reveal the Grace within other characters such as the Grandmother.

"If its symbol, to hell with it" and as an American Catholic, she had voiced "a characteristics religious ambivalence concerning symbols" (Yaghjian 268). Generally, OConnor throughout her fiction is known
to use symbols rather than define them and her short story "A Good Man is Hard to Find" is no exception in they add creation of depth to the story
in what she explains that "the mind is led on by what is sees into the greater depths that the books symbols naturally suggest" and "the truer the symbol ...
the more meaning it opens up" (Yaghjian 268). Christian symbols and portrayals of Christ abound in "A Good Man is Hard to
Find" and in many ways OConnor applies a "narrative Christology" in which the situations, actions and characters symbolize and portray Christ. OConnor not only reflects aspects of Christ within her
characters and storylines but she also advocates that readers must search her stories for the "least likely suspects" in which "Grace, to the Catholic way of thinking, can, and does,
