under the nose of other people without them being a part of that conversation. Texting allows people to converse without interrupting other conversations and does not impede ordinary life. One
can be doing anything-shopping, eating in a restaurant, mowing the lawn-and a text comes in, but there is no urgency to respond. A text can be answered later in the
day if necessary. Texting allows for the ultimate freedom in conversation but there are social ramifications of the act. Texting is sometimes rude and disruptive, but at the same time,
helps people to stay connected with those they want to be with. This shifts the balance of focus in relationships as when people are in social situations, they may be
"talking" to completely different people, something that serves as a disconnect on one hand, and a closer connection on the other. There are sometimes issues with the use of
this technology. Someone might inadvertently text the wrong person the wrong message, and this can be quite embarrassing or be attached to consequences. This is particularly true when it comes
to secrets or complaints. Someone may complain about their boss in a text but accidentally send it to that boss, a situation that could prove disastrous. Someone could get fired,
break up a marriage, or be very embarrassed due to a texting mistake. Similarly, someone might be texting the correct person, but write something other than what they mean. Additionally,
texts are more likely to be misinterpreted than are telephone conversions because there is no emotion or voice inflection. This is why there are emoticons, but emoticons do not substitute
