the beautiful freestanding, sculptural three-part Opera House is the first building in the world to use structural silicone and suspended laminated vertical glass on a large scale. The construction
of this marvelous Australian building has one of the longest contractual histories of the twentieth century. Unfortunately, architect Jorn Utzon became the scapegoat of a scandalous political affair and in
1966 withdrew from his project. Sitting on Bennelong Point, virtually in the Harbour and overlooked by the great Sydney Harbour Bridge, the Opera House is all roofs with an imposing
base. Distinctive sail-shaped towers in Utzons original design were pronounced unbuildable by the British engineering firm of Ove Arup & Partners, and were redesigned at a much lower angle.
Originally the winner of an international open competition in 1957, it was a scheme that broke most of the rules. It was finally completed in August 1973 by others under
the direction of Peter Hall(Sharp 315. Use Despite its name, the opera house is in fact a complex that includes a concert hall, a theater for opera and ballet, a
smaller theater for plays, a recording hall and rehearsal rooms, and a movie theater. It is the home of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, the Australian Ballet, and the Australian Opera.
