which only adds to the air pollution. Al Gore, perhaps the number one political spokesman in respect to the environment, has been criticized for flying in planes a lot. It is true that many environmentalists have been called hypocrites because they too use the very things they are protesting against. But in this society, it is difficult to forgo electricity or gasoline and be happy. Also, many environmentalists find that they are at odds with the community. For example, the businesses and community members often want to see progress, but growth is sometimes at the expense of the environment. How might economic interests and environmental interests mesh to create a desirable outcome? One answer is in sustainability. Sustainability-a term that will be defined in the next section-is something that can provide a sense of continuity and commitment to the environment. Today, the worry is that the oil will be depleted. Some contend that there is fighting going on in the Middle East simply due to the fact that oil resources are not infinite. The real problem, as many see it, is that while the current society can live with the natural resources of today, they are at a loss to come up with a plan for the future. What will people in the future do when oil resources run out? Some contend that those people will have invented something by that time, but even so, the environment is being hurt in the present and many people believe that something should be done today.
