The Swing Riots in England, although perhaps less well-known than other examples of workers taking militant
action against new technology which affected their livelihood, were nevertheless an important period in British social history and played a significant part in later social and political reforms. In addition,
the repercussions which followed had a significant impact on social culture elsewhere: many of those involved were sentenced to transportation to Tasmania, which is in the present day a matter
of considerable interest for Australians tracing their genealogy.
Even though the Swing Riots are named after "Captain Swing", it seems highly unlikely that such an individual ever existed. According to some sources (such as Villagenet, 2003) the name
was coined as a reference to individuals "swinging" from the gallows, although others such as Sharman (2003) assert that it means the moving part of a threshing flail, which was
called the "swing". Threatening letters which were sent in the course of the uprisings were signed by "the Captain" or "Captain Swing", but it is evident that these letters originated
from many different sources, some more literate than others, and some were quite clearly fakes or parodies (such as one written by a group of schoolboys, protesting against the "thrashing
machine" of corporal punishment in their school). In any event, the name "Swing Riots" became the generic term for the protests.
