Do the public and private U.S. colleges and universities really provide support for all of their students? In examining a number of issues, it seems that the answer is not
definitive. That is, many universities support many students, but by no means do all students receive the same support. Examples of how private and public colleges and universities support their
students is in respect to scholarships. Many universities and colleges make scholarships available to students based on academic achievement or need. Thus, someone who is very smart and poor will
reap the most benefits from institution supported financial aid. Yet, those who are average students who come from average, middle class backgrounds usually do not quality for additional assistance.
International students may benefit from the types of scholarships mentioned because they will not be eligible for many other types of financial aid such as what American students reap from
filling out their FAFSA forms. For example, Ragins reports: "For international students who want to study in the United States your primary vehicles for receiving scholarships are the colleges and
universities themselves" (272). Indeed, colleges and universities want to attract the best and brightest students in order to maintain or improve their reputations. Therefore, they may offer international students the
same deals, or at least similar ones, to American students. Colleges and universities do support their students financially to an extent, but largely, they do this for students who
