In each work, the supernatural aspects of the story is not a primary feature, but rather serves as a devise that allows the author to emphasize thematic content. For example, Pushkin opens his supernatural tale with his protagonist, Hermann, hearing the tale of a woman, the Countess Ann Fedotovna, grandmother to one of the card players in the opening scene, a man named Tomsky. This countess pays her debts through her mystical ability to discern three cards in succession. Tomsky asserts, "She had four sons including my father; all four were desperate gamblers, and yet she did not reveal her secret to a single one of them" (Pushkin 867). Next, Pushkin introduces Lisaveta who imagines that Hermann will be her rescuer; however, Hermann imagines himself wooing the eighty-seven year old countess in order to learn her secret. Norton Anthology editors point out that Pushkin utilizes conventions that are common to the ghost stories in folk tales in order to "convey serious criticism of a social structure corrupted by universal concentration of money" (864). All of the characters are only interested in personal gain. The countess uses money to ensure her dominance over those around her. Lisaveta risks her reputation (during an age when a womans reputation was crucial to her welfare and future) on the slim chance that she can free herself from subservience. Hermann indulges in subterfuge in order to gain his own ends. The Queen of Spades is symbolic of the spiritual death to which all of the characters wholeheartedly subscribe.
