thoroughly unique. Understanding the differences between these dynasties certainly brings to light many cultural subtleties as well as a taste of what was happening during those eras.
The impact which these dynasties had over peoples lives - from political agendas to routine daily tasks - is actually quite enormous in the overall picture. The Difference
in the Sung Dynasty The Sung Dynasty began in 960 and ended up lasting more than three centuries (Ebrey, 1993). This period is considered by many to be the
most vibrant and successful in Chinese history, and there is good reason for this evaluation (Ebrey, 1993). One notable achievement of that era is in regards to art, which
is some of the finest ever produced (Ebrey, 1993). That era was known for it paintings, calligraphy, silk tapestries and porcelain pieces - all of which were extraordinarily beautiful
and refined (Ebrey, 1993). Also notable is the politics of that era, which was known to produce highly civilized and educated leaders who placed extraordinary value on intellect and
scholarly achievement (Ebrey, 1993). The Sung dynasty is often compared to the Tang dynasty which preceded it (618-907) (Ebrey, 1993). This is indeed a stark contrast as
the Tang dynasty is best remembered for its "virile emperors, military expansion, passionate poets, and cultural confidence" (Ebrey, 1993). Therefore, the Tang dynasty could be interpreted as a time
of passion and exuberance while the Sung dynasty could be viewed as more refined and more likely to focus on education and scholarly achievements (Ebrey, 1993).
