its ability to poignantly criticize society. Novels through the ages have reflected our collective concerns, dreams, heartaches, hopes, fears, and struggles. In essence, novels reflect us. Therefore,
their ability to examine those parts of ourselves that are flawed enables the novel to exact tremendous power. We see ourselves through the characters in these novels, allowing us
to better understand our society and its problems through this critical approach. For instance, take Jane Austins, Pride and Prejudice.
This story underscores how pride prevents the characters from knowing true happiness. Furthermore, these characters are mired in social conventions, through which they must wade in order to
understand the reality of their lives. Our lives too are much like this, and this is what lends this novel
such poignancy and such power. Even in contemporary life, we can certainly associate with the underlying core values to which the author refers. Certainly the story takes place
in another era entirely, but time and place do not remove one from the struggles of pride and prejudice. We see evidence of these struggles constantly in our lives,
in our relationships with family and friends, in our working environments - all of these play an important role in who we are, and all are largely determined by a
host of social conventions. Therefore, it is through characters such as Elizabeth and Darcy that we are able to see
such faults in ourselves, and to better assess who we are as individuals. The novel brings this to our attention, and in this way wields enormous power. By
