may be argued that part f the reason behind the success of Microsoft was the right people in the right place at the right time, with the correct knowledge
to take advantage of the position. Whilst some may argue that there has been some luck, other may use the old adage that there is not such thing as luck,
or that businesses or individuals create their own luck. We can argue that the company started with some luck and a first
mover advantage but looking at the development of the company there have been other emergent and purposeful strategies used such as leadership strategy and the use as well as alleged
abuse of a dominant market position in order to try and create a virtual monopoly. To consider this we can look at the strategies used by the company in
its development and selected events within the company history and strategy to assess how much has been judgment and how much luck.
To consider the way that Microsoft have developed we first need to look at the types of strategy that the company may have used in more generic terms. Michael
Porter has considered the way in which firms compete and defined two types of competitive advantage. These are cost advantage and differentiation. These are two different ways a competitor may
get the edge on its rivals and develop an advantage. For example, if there are two products which are very similar, neither has the advantage, but if one looks better,
or has extra features, it may have an advantage, just as if one costs a company less to produce, the company will have an advantage afforded by superior profits. To
