which Bezos tagged "Earths Biggest Bookstore" (Rivlin, 2005). Bezos was 30 years old in 1994 when he dreamed up the idea of an Onlline book store (Rivlin, 2005). He had
collecge degrees in compuer science and electrical engineering from Pinceton and he was a hedge fund analyst at the time (Rivlin, 2005). In its first six months, Amazon.com sold
only a half-million dollars worth of books but by 1997, revenue exceeded $147.8 million (Rivlin, 2005). Despite its huge sales, the company was losisng money, $719 million lost in 1999
with revenues at $1.6 billion (Rivlin, 2005). The pundits thought Amazon.com was a flash-in-the-pan and would close down - it is still going strong. It took seven years and some
drastic changes but Amazon.com showed its first profit in 2003; that was seven years after going public (Rivlin, 2005). Bezos is described as having a "quirky, hyperbolic personality" (Deutschman, 2004).
Bezos says he has been "extraoridinarily" lucky and his success "couldnt have happened planetary alignment" (Deutschman, 2004). Others, hwoever, say that he is innovative, intuitive and creativic as well as
farsighted (Deutschman, 2004). He is analystical and he does not give up (Deutschman, 2004). Some believe that what is unique about Bezos is his great leaps of faith (Deutschman, 2004).
He operates his business with an overriding belief that: "whats good for the customer will ultimately turn out to be in the companys enlightened self-interest" (Deutschman, 2004). Another thing that
sets Bezos apart is his ability to listen to critics and then, make changes when it is in the best interest to the company (Deutschman, 2004). Michael Dell literally began
