This paper uses the article "Sex, Lies and Subprime Mortgages" as its primary source for a discussion of one of the issues that that arose from the crash: the need to protect whistleblowers. Discussion The article "Sex, Lies and Subprime Mortgages" appeared in Business Week in 2008, and described some of the practices-shenanigans, really-that brokers, mortgage wholesalers and bankers pulled in order to get unqualified people qualified for loans. Much of the article concentrates on a description of the women who trade sex for the opportunity to purchase mortgage applications. While thats certainly sensational material, the issue that seems more interesting is that of the people who did the right thing: they blew the whistle on their companies and banks when the organizations were acting illegally. Considering the fact that the article implies that most of the people in the industry either did knowingly make illegal transactions, then the story of those few who stood up against the wrongdoing is all the more compelling. Thus, one issue that can be isolated from the article is the practice of whistleblowing, which is understood as an employee recognizing that their company is engaged in some questionable or illegal activity, and reporting that fact to the authorities. In almost every case, the reward for doing the right thing is losing ones job. Therefore, we want to explore the experience of the whistleblowers in the article, and then what can be done to safeguard people who make this extremely difficult decision. The best way to understand this is to first define "mortgage wholesalers," since they are the people the article is targeting.
