What are three tools and/or approaches you can use to collect qualitative data? What are the
strengths and weaknesses of each one? Qualitative analysis is one means of approaching a research problem. Numerous tools are used to collect
qualitative data but foremost among these tools is the tool of observation. Observation can be broken into two distinct approaches, however. These are participant observation and outside observation.
In participant observation the researcher interacts with the people that comprise his study group rather than observes that group from a more removed perspective (Getting Started: Research in
Planning and Evaluation, 2006). The risks of subjectivity enter into each of these types of observational approaches. It is difficult to interact either directly or indirectly with study
subjects and not form opinions of those subjects. These opinions tend to impact the way that we subsequently interpret the data that is collected.
Other tools that are commonly utilized to collect qualitative data are interviews and surveys. Both of these tools can be used to collect the same type of
data but the interview requires the presence and interaction of the researcher. Once again, subjectivity enters the picture. With direct interaction it is likely that the researcher will
act either partially or wholly based on his or her opinion of the subject. At the same time, however, there is an inherent strength in direct interaction. Direct
interaction with the subject allows the opportunity for more accurate data collection because areas where the results might otherwise be unclear because of misinterpretation or the failure to ask the
