Essay / Research Paper Abstract
This is a 3 page paper discussing the mechanics of materials as used in civil engineering. The mechanics of materials is an important area of study within the civil engineering discipline which examines the properties of materials under a variety of conditions which may be present in the field. In order for materials to be used within design, industrial and other projects, materials must be tested for their structural strength in the areas of stress, strain, fatigue and types of deformation and other aspects before being applied in any operational system.

present in the field. In order for materials to be used within design, industrial and other projects, materials must be tested for their structural strength in the areas of stress,
strain, fatigue and types of deformation and other aspects before being applied in any operational system. The discipline of civil engineering involves the
analysis, planning, design, construction, testing and maintenance of various environmental and industrial facilities within the commercial, private and government sectors. Materials engineering within the area of civil engineering studies the
materials in regards to their mechanical, chemical and electrical properties and the research within this field is largely responsible for the development, operations and management in the industrial fields (Purdue,
2003). The field needs to consider materials within constantly changing environments in order to facilitate the production of metals, ceramics, semi-conductors, and other non-metallic materials often used in the energy
and transportation fields. In order to do this engineers must study the mechanics of materials which involves material behavior and the relationships between external forces on elastic and inelastic bodies,
stress, strain, combined stresses and deformation of bars, beams, shafts and pressure valves among other materials through an exhaustive series of tensile and fatigue tests among others in order to
accommodate all internal and external environments possible within the field (Purdue, 2003). Within the discipline and study of the mechanics of materials, engineers must understand the concepts of strength, fatigue,
types of deformation and testing among other factors. Strength is basically considered as a materials resistance to failure and is measured in different ways depending on the material. Tensile strength
is considered "the maximum tensile force in the test divided by the original cross-sectional areas" while shear strength and compressive strength are considered as "equivalents of tensile strength in their
