This is a 4 page paper discussing gender relations and the study of racism, classism, heterosexism and anti-Semitism. Gender as a concept has often been a source for social inequality as too have race, class, sexuality and religion. A study of gender relations however shows that gender, as with many other issues of inequality, is actually a social construct and not a primary attribute of an individual. Gender, like race, class, sexuality and religion, is often misunderstood and the cause of prejudice based on traditional, white, upper class, male, Western social theories. Recent psychoanalytical, cultural and feminist studies, on the other hand, reveal that most of the “predefined” concepts used today are actually social constructs which vary from culture to culture and a “consciousness raising” must occur in order to overcome the hierarchical organizations which lead to inequality.

accounts for differences in human character or ability and that a particular race is superior to others" and "discrimination or prejudice based on race" (American, 2000). In Judith Butlers text
"Gender Trouble: Feminism and the Subversion of Identity" (1990), Butler asks the readers to think about the terms of gender in a postmodern, social and psychological terms. In psychoanalytical terms,
the term "woman" is considered as the "other of man" but in feminist theory, "woman" is considered a universal category which excludes "ideas of differences among women such as race,
class, or sexuality, for example" (Butler, 1997). From within Butlers writings then, women and gender are more universal concepts than that of race or other "fragmentations" of the concept of
woman. Race and social class is also discussed within Unger and Crawfords text "Women and Gender: A Feminist Psychology" (1992). The book overall
is a "reminder that the white, middle-class, Eurocentric norms of earlier texts are ignoring a large proportion of the women in the world" and many initial theories of gender relations
