1776 is about George Washington and the courage it took to lead an army against the most powerful empire in the world when he didnt have the military background to
do so. It details eighteen months of his struggle and the dedication of his troops to the cause of freedom. His story is a sweeping account of the soldiers,
military leaders, and the patriots of the Continental Army and the British Army, but its main focus remains George Washington. Background
and Analysis The way that McCullough weaves the historical account inspires, for one reads in the pages how very fragile the fledgling country
