The time it takes individuals to enunciate a color when presented with the written word representing that color can vary according to a
number of factors. Psychologists have explained these variables using the term "Stroop Effect" in recognition of the English psychologist John Ridley Stroop who first published his research on this
reaction time in 1935. Although Stroop wasnt the first to explore such variables, indeed the first work on the topic was published in Germany in 1929, his work became
the most widely known and his name used to describe cognitive behavior as it varies in accordance to what color print is used to write a color term. The
need for additional research in this effect is obvious. Many variables have yet to be explored in regard to how they interact with the Stroop Effect. More specifically,
this paper will suggest that the research question of whether or not "gender and age affect ability to verbally recite a list consisting of spelled-out colors, which are printed in
different colors than the ones they define" be more fully explored. The Stroop Effect is now widely used in psychology to describe cognitive
flexibility or an individuals capability to "to switch attention from one aspect of an object to another, or to adapt and shift ones response based on situational demands, such as
