of information that suggests that the effect of fly ash on the strength of concrete is that makes it much stronger. The actual strength "is the ratio of strength of
a 30% fly ash mix to a Portland cement-only mix" (Lindon, 2001, p.67). Fly ash comes from the burning of coal ("Environmental Purchasing Bulletin," 2001). It is
an additive that will strengthen concrete an it is durable and very easy to work with ("Environmental Purchasing Bulletin," 2001). The use of the substance in that manner began in
the United States during the early part of the 1930s ("Environmental Purchasing Bulletin," 2001). It was in fact stumbled upon during the building of the Hoover Dam in 1929 ("Fly
Ash Concrete," 2005). Fly ash was used as filler and it was learned that a reduced amount of cement had to be used a result ("Fly Ash Concrete," 2005).
A significant breakthrough came in respect to the use of fly ash in concrete as related to the construction of Hungry Horse Dam during 1948 ("Environmental Purchasing Bulletin," 2001). In
