country itself. Japan - Military History and Current Status Japan is a very modern country which is based on
democracy (Japan - An Introduction, 2002). Married with this modern exterior is a rich history of tradition (Japan - An Introduction, 2002). There are few raw materials in
Japan and still this country has a highly developed industrialized economy and has indeed become recognized as a world power (Japan - An Introduction, 2002). Japan is one of
the worlds largest exporters of goods (Japan - An Introduction, 2002). In terms of its military, "the military machine that earlier in the twentieth century had conquered much of
the Asia-Pacific region has been replaced by the streamlined Self-Defense Forces (SDF), well trained but under-equipped and barely able to defend the home islands" (Japan - An Introduction, 2002).
