This 16 page report discusses the Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI), more commonly referred to as “Star Wars.” The administration of U.S. President Ronald Reagan envisioned a program for a missile-defense shield, based in outer space that was supposed to be able to render nuclear weapons obsolete. SDI, implemented or not, meant decisions would have to be made that would most certainly affect the future of the world. Although SDI-Star Wars never went beyond a rudimentary testing stage, it changed the strategic-arms debate in ways favorable to the United States. Bibliography lists 11 sources.

foremost experts on the program, including SDI Director Lt. General James Abrahamson of the Air Force, Assistant Secretary of Defense Richard Perle, and Paul Nitze, the Administrations special adviser on
arms control. Prominent scientific and strategic critics of the concept spoke as well. The purpose was to "put technology in balance with politics" (Thomas 6).ii
The journalists left understanding that SDI, implemented or not, meant decisions would have to be made that would most certainly affect the future of the
world. The issue was debated, argued, protested, and eventually put on the proverbial back-burner of defense issues. And yet, the issues that were presented at that conference illustrated
just how far humanity had advanced in its conceptualization of international encounters and national self-defense. If nothing else, the Strategic Defense Initiative emphasized the fact that, to take liberties with
