The way in which class struggle and social ideals develop and are perceived is not limited to the development of political ideals in a political arena, political idea will often
be supported, reflective or challenged by the media, which can include literature. When looking at books such as The Story of the Stone by Cao Xuegin (Tsao Hsueh-chin), The True
Story of Ah Q by Lu Hsun, Diary of a Madman by Lu Xun and Raise the Red Lantern it is possible to see the books as both art as
well as a commentary on the nature and development of society. The Story of the Stone, later published under the title Dream of the Red Chamber was written and
published anonymously but it is generally agreed upon that it was written by Cao Xuegin. Seen as a classic Chinese novel and
is often interpreted as a romance. However, when one considers that the book survived the Cultural Revolution; Mao Zedong is said to have read the book five times, as such
there must have been a social or political message if saw in the book which supported rather than contradicted his model of socialism (Stone 14). The story is one
that shows the societal structure and the flaws of the bourgeoisie and the reasons behind their ultimate fall. The work is the
rise and fall of a powerful Chinese family, taking place in the Qing dynasty, during which the Manchu people from the North conquered the Han people (Stone 14). Volume 1
