Essay / Research Paper Abstract
A 10 page discussion of the problems encountered by a fictional Russian Jew who immigrates to the U.S. after having spent the first twenty-two years of his life in Russia. Written in the first person, this paper recounts his experiences and perceptions of such historical events as the Cold War and the dissolution of the Soviet Union and emphasizes how these events impacted Russians differently than they did Americans. Notes the problems he has encountered with discrimination and prejudice in the U.S. and the pressure he has faced, particularly at the hands of the media, to abandon his traditional morals and ethics in favor of what he perceives as a cultural vacuum of ethical and moral degradation. Concludes that he has faced discrimination and prejudice not because of a discernible difference in race but because of a discernible differences in beliefs and experiences.
