Chief Roy Crazy Horse of the Powhatan Nation voiced the opinion that: "The film distorts history beyond recognition. Our offers to assist Disney with cultural and historical accuracy were rejected" (powhatan.org/pocc.html). Facts vs. Film "Pocahontas" was a nickname, meaning "the naughty one" or "spoiled child." Her real name was Matoaka. The legend has always been that she saved a heroic John Smith from being clubbed to death by her father. Powhatan, in 1607. She would have no older than 10 or 11 at the time. The truth is that Smiths fellow colonists described him as an abrasive, ambitious, self-promoting mercenary soldier. It is important to understand that the first time Smith told his story of being saved by Pocahontas was 17 years after it was supposed to have happened. Writing in his own journal after his winter stay with Powhatans people, he noted that he had been kept comfortable and treated in a friendly fashion as an honored guest of Powhatan and Powhatans brothers (Crazy Horse powhatan.org/pocc.html). In fact, it was not until 1624 and the publication of Smiths The Generall Historie of Virginia...&c., that Smith told the story that "as many as could layd hands on, dragged him to them [the stones], and thereon laid his head, and being ready with their clubs, to beat out his braines," when enters "Pocahontas, the Kings dearest daughter" (Hume theweboftime.com/Poca/POCAHO~1.html).
