Odysseus and his family. It argues that each of the examples provides strong foreshadowing of the end of the poem. Discussion Agamemnon was of the House of Atreus, which was
cursed (Sandels). He sacrificed his daughter Iphigenia in order to get fair winds to Troy (he was the leader of the Greek armies there), and in so doing, incurred the
undying wrath of his wife Clytemnestra (Sandels). While he was away, Clytemnestra was seduced by Aegisthus and when Agamemnon returned to Mycenae, the lovers murdered him in his bath (Sandels).
His son Orestes avenged him, but was himself pursued by the Furies, in a sort of never-ending cycle of murder, revenge and punishment. The first time Agamemnon is mentioned is
in Book 3 of The Odyssey, when Telemachus, Odysseuss son, asks King Nestor if he (Nestor) knows what has become of Odysseus. Nestor says he doesnt know, and then says
he made it safely home, unlike Agamemnon, whose homecoming ended in death. After relating the story, he adds ""Ah, how fine it is, when a man is brought down, /
to leave a son behind! Orestes took revenge,/ he killed that cunning, murderous Aegisthus, / whod killed his famous father" (3.222-225). Nestor is hinting, not very subtly, that if Odysseus
is dead it will be up to Telemachus to revenge him. But even more importantly and in a broader sense, he is saying that there are some insults that cannot
be forgiven if family honor is to be retained. This plays out at the end of the poem, when Odysseus returns to Ithaca and finds the suitors in his house;
