the film, and whether they conflict or complement each other. Discussion There are several parallel stories, some involving the group and some concentrating on individuals. The group stories involve the
mob boss trying to keep the union members in line, and the priests efforts to get them to talk. The individual stories focus on the relationship between Terry Malloy (Marlon
Brando) and Evie Doyle (Eva Marie Saint); between Terry and his brother Charley (Rod Steiger); and between Terry and the poorly named Johnny Friendly, the mob boss (Lee J. Cobb).
The heart of any drama is conflict, so what director Elia Kazan and screenwriter Budd Schulberg have done is create a series of storylines that conflict with each other
and within themselves. That is, there is conflict between Terry and Evie, as well as conflict between whether they as a "unit" should do something about her brothers death. Its
difficult to explain. Evie wants Terry to help find her brothers killer and he is reluctant to do so, because hes involved in the murder. That puts the two of
them in conflict. But their story-trying to find who killed Joey-is in conflict with the story of the mob boss, Friendly, and how he runs the docks. The same
thing applies in the other cases. The priest, Father Barry (Karl Malden) wants to save the souls of his parishioners, but he also wants to rid the area of corruption,
which means standing up to the union. His courage in the face of threats from the mob-they wouldnt stop at killing a priest-is one of the things that finally convinces
