Individuals who endure domestic abuse adapt in a complexity of ways to that abuse. One of
the more interesting of those adaptations is what is referred to as Stockholm Syndrome, a behavior so named after it was observed among those that had been held captive for
five days in 1973 afer a failed bank robbery in Stockholm, Sweden in 1973. The Stockholm Syndrome is characterized by captives developing an allegiance to their captor, an allegiance
that persists even past the point they are released. Domestic abuse is often characterized by the same set of relationships.
It is important to acknowledge that there is no way to predict which families will suffer from domestic violence and which will not. Indeed the tragedy of domestic abuse
is as diverse as the world population itself. Much of the research, in fact, reports no consistent correlation between any behaviors, attitudes, demographics, or personalities which can be used
to predict that one individual will suffer domestic violence while another will not. There are, however, standard sociological methodologies which make the issues, and potential solutions, for domestic violence
more understandable. These methodologies are only applicable, however, when considered in relation to society as a whole. This consideration, by necessity, includes the various administrative bodies that are
charged with protecting one aspect or another of the abused partners welfare. Domestic abuse, of course, can be perpetuated by either sex.
