not a very startling announcement. But likely, to mechanical engineers, it was a grand announcement indeed. What exactly was going on at Grays Ferry? What was announced was the creation
of the first unit synchronized to the electric grid which could export power ("Trigen Energy" PG) . The schedule of events that had been announced also called for the
start-up of the associated steam turbine-generator as well as extensive operational and environmental testing (PG). Why would the procedure create kudos? To many, starting something, whether it be a
car or a toaster oven, would require little more than turning a key or pressing a button. But starting up a steam turbine is quite another matter. What is the
start up procedure for the steam turbine? First, it should be noted that the steam turbine uses heat energy in order to create steam which produces the momentum to move
the turbine. The force is helped also by a generator. Part of the procedures involved include the availability of cold water to condense the exhaust steam from the turbine in
order that it can be used over and over again during the process. While the beauty of the steam turbine is its simplicity, start up is anything but simple. This
point was made clear when companies were evaluating their systems in the event that Y2K would have a devastating effect on their plants. But the worries were really due to
