However, just as in Christians countries there are divergences between different states. If we look at the status of women in two Muslim countries, such as Pakistan and Iran then there are major differences despite the temptation for many Christian country resident to look an the treatment of women in Muslim cultures as a signal attitude. To understand the difference we also need to understand the way in which the attitudes may not all originate from Islam although some of the attitudes may come from the interpretation of Muslim beliefs (Engineer, 2003). The influences ion the status of women are also rooted in the culture and traditions the different interpretation of the Quran as well as the general world view (Engineer, 2003). It is also important to realise that the view may not be one that aims for equality as seen in the west, but there is the pronouncement in the Quran that there should be equal rights for both sexes (2:228) (Engineer, 2003). The issues is the way this s interpreted now and in the past which reflects on the current status. If we look at Pakistan this is a country where there has been a progressive attitude and women have a more equal and freer status. There is the movement towards equality with the appointment of seven female ambassadors around the world (Engineer, 2003). There have also been women in the military including promotion to the ranks of Lieutenant (Ansari, 2001).
