and the infamous Bowling Alone is an essay that looks at a fragmented society. Indeed, in part, the illusion of social capital in the form of bowling leagues may in
part explain the violence in Americas schools. While there may be a broader social explanation--deterioration of the family, a colder world--there is no direct relationship to anything in respect to
these kids who shot up a school, killing more than a dozen students. Right after the incident, journalists and psychologists scrambled to find an explanation for the inexplicable. How could
two seemingly well cared for boys just decide to kill themselves, and take a bunch of students with them, for apparently no reason? Causative factors were discussed and some include
video game violence, Marilyn Manson music and bullying, but by and large these explanations are not sufficient. They do not exactly explain what happened nor do they explain why after
Columbine things would calm down. For a period of a few years, it seems that school shootings were becoming quite popular. They would come out of nowhere and usually in
rather rural or safe areas. People were shocked. Then, after Columbine, there was perhaps another small shooting or two. Then they stopped. Is violence still a problem in Americas schools?
II. School Violence There is concern about violence in Americas schools. In part, the concern still lingers from the rash of violent episodes that preceded Columbine and also
