Blasts of light, motion, Tortured vision, endless beauty, Lead to new understanding. Vincent van Gogh painted The Starry Night (oil on canvas, 29 x 36 1/4") in June of
1889 (The Starry Night, 2011). This evocative painting has been immortalized in song ("Starry, Starry Night" by Don McLean) and is generally regarded as one of Van Goghs most famous
and beloved works. Analysis of this painting suggests that part of its fascination and beauty lies in its inherent contradictions, as Van Goghs subject is a peaceful, starry night illuminated
by a crescent moon, yet its sweeping brushstrokes and sense of churning hills and sky convey a mood of anxiety and frenetic activity. The most prominent feature of the
painting is the sky, which covers roughly the top two-thirds of the canvas. The stars are yellow points of light, with their luminescence indicated by circular brushstrokes of white lightening
the royal blue of the night sky. This feature is particularly prominent in regards to the crescent moon that dominates the upper right corner. Between the stars, with white tempering
the shades of royal blue, Van Gogh portrays the sky as swirling and churning. A bold swatch swirls across the painting into a wave that doubles back on itself to
