There are, of course, certain types of standards for speaking the English language, a certain structure to the way sentences are formed, but from this point on there can be a great deal of variance. In the following paper we examine who or what sets the standards for speaking the English language. Speaking Standards As mentioned, we are first taught how to form sentences and speak the English language by our parents, if we are born to parents whose native tongue is the English language. Through our parents we are taught correct pronunciation and correct formation if our parents are aware of these standards. As one author states, "We begin by imitating what we hear our parents say as best we can, repeating random phrases. Our parents in subtle ways punish us for the childish speech errors we make (by not responding, correcting the error, etc.) and reward correct phrases (by responding positively)" (Anonymous Language Acquisition, 2002; acquisition.html). In such a case one may find that they are born into a family where the parents are well educated and where the parents insist on proper use of the language. This particular writer was born to a mother who had a degree in English and was very particular about incorrect use of the language, such as the simple word "aint," a word that should not be used. And correct pronunciation of words was also instilled at an early age. In better understanding how this works, many children come up with their own understanding of the language at a very early age. In personal experience such phrases as "Im being have" or "We love our chothers" or "Im being fearcul" are misinterpretations of "Im behaving," ...
