the opening of an architecture business from start to finish from the economic or financial perspective. We will start where the individual, or partners involved have decided to open a
business. The first stage of opening a business the preparation to make sure that money is not wasted in an investment in the wrong area or the wrong market.
This initial stage is one of research to examine the markets which are available and the options for setting up a business in terms of access to those markets. It
may be tempted to set up an office in a downtown area where there are no other architecture businesses, avoiding high rent and rates, with the idea of accessing a
new market. However, it may be that there is not the demand for architecture services in the area, or those looking services are more likely to approach firms in an
uptown area. In many industries there is the phenomenon of clustering, were a number of businesses with similar products or services are located close together (Mintzberg et al, 2003). This
may appear to increase immediate competition, but it also has the impact of attracting customers (Mintzberg et al, 2003). It is only with
undertaking research that the purchasing patterns and trends within the architecture market in that particular area may be assessed. Areas where clustering takes place may present higher costs due to
higher rents or property prices but if this is greater and more efficient access to the decide market it is a price domain worth paying.
