lives, and each stage of adulthood represents a unique passage. A common reevaluation occurs during middle age. There are three stages of adulthood which are young adulthood, middle adulthood and
late adulthood (Leal, 1998). Young adulthood is when adulthood is first reached and these individuals look to establish intimate relationships (Leal, 1998). Middle adulthood occurs when adults are at a
stage where they are engaged of productive and creative work such as caring for children or forging a career (Leal, 1998). Late adulthood-characterized by the struggle inherent between integrity and
despair-is reached when adults look back at their lives to see if their lives were well spent (Leal, 1998). This is often a time of reevaluation and introspection.
When people reach older adulthood, they often feel that their personalities have remained the same (Berger, 2011). There is an added importance to maintaining the
self, which is why many of the elderly are reluctant to give up driving (Berger, 2011). Other objects take on more meaning as older adults cling to their identity (Berger,
2011). In other words, many elderly seek a way to hold tight to the things they cherish such as a piece of jewelry, a home, an animal, or a vehicle.
This is part of their identity. Perhaps psychologically, the loss of items that younger relatives desire suggests that they in fact may be dying soon. After all, if they have
no need for a car because they are too old to drive, the situation will never improve. Thus, the giving up of the vehicle is more than giving up an
inanimate object. It is giving up on life. Of course, death is inevitable at some point during this phase and this is the phase where adults must come to terms
