While perhaps the cause of the tuberculosis in this community may not be directly attributable to mining and industrialization, what is known is that TB was problematic and to some extent, still is. It soon becomes clear that historians have different ideas in respect to this topic. According to Jack and Ray Simons, "the Tuberculosis Commission of that year reproached the management of De Beers Premier mine near Pretoria for its extravagant waste of life and health. And the rebuke applied more or less to all mines.i " DeBeers and other firms that made a lot of money off of mining were to some extent blamed for the medical problems that crept up in South Africa. Other accounts of the goings on tell the same tale. During the early part of the 1940s, there were awful conditions in towns and the situation definitely had gotten worseii . The government had relaxed a good deal of controls in terms of the influx of African people into towns and this was primarily due to the fact that there was a significant need for labour in this industry; this contributed to the massive expansion in respect to the urban African populationiii . It seems as if what occurred was that there was industry in this part of South Africa. In part, much of the tragedies that occurred, including but not limited to the influx of people, had to do with profit. Materiality loomed large in this new globalized world and using bodies to do the work was all that some of these conglomerates cared about.
