Richmonds speeches to their troops as they set off to do battle. In these speeches we gain an understanding of the two men and we gain an understanding of the
foundation of the battle that will take place. Without knowing anything about the story itself we can gain powerful information regarding these men and their causes through their speeches. The
following paper discusses their speeches, illustrating how Richmonds appears to be a battle for the common people against a tyrant and Richards speech is from a self-righteous man who has
power and wishes to squelch the peasants of the land. Richmond Richmond begins his speech by stating, "More than I have said, loving countrymen, The leisure and enforcement
of the time Forbids to dwell upon: yet remember this, God and our good cause fight upon our side; The prayers of holy saints and wronged souls, Like high-reard bulwarks,
stand before our faces" (V, iii). We note that he brings into play the religious faith of the people, giving them the understanding that they fight on a side of
righteousness and of truth. He then illustrates that Richard is one man not to be followed, stating that he is "A bloody tyrant and a homicide; One raised in blood,
and one in blood establishd; One that made means to come by what he hath, And slaughterd those that were the means to help him; Abase foul stone, made precious
by the foil Of Englands chair, where he is falsely set; One that hath ever been Gods enemy" (V, iii). Again we see the element of religion and faith and
truth. Richmond himself appears to be man of compassion. He seems to be a man who is truly a believer of what he fights for and a supporter of his
