noted, a form of education, but it was also a bit more than that in relationship to its production of citizens. Anyone who ultimately got their citizenship went through the
agoge, gaining their citizenship at the age of 21 (Schrader, 2006). The agoge seems, in todays terms, to have been a very serious sort of boarding, or military school. It
possessed many unique elements and features. The following paper examines the features of the agoge and then speculates about why it was important, and why it was implemented.
The Spartan Agoge As noted, "Successful completion of the public system of upbringing, the agoge, was a prerequisite for Spartan citizenship" (Schrader, 2006).
And, the training for these citizens began when the child was only 7. While men and women were both educated it seems to be the young males who experienced the
agoge. The boys would leave their homes at the age of 7 and move into barracks with all the other Spartan boys (Gill, 2006). They would live in the agoge
for the next 13 years (Gill, 2006). And, while there, "They were under constant surveillance" (Gill, 2006). Gill (2006) indicates that the
agoge was not really implemented to teach literacy but to instill ideals of obedience, fitness, and courage. However, another author indicates that young men from the agoge were well known
for their intelligence, and that the Spartans were known for being incredibly polite and noble (Schrader, 2006). It is also noted that they excelled at poetry, music and dance (Schrader,
