the north was Protestant and the south, Catholic (Belgium travel guide, 2006). In the 1560s the rebelled against Philip II, the king of Spain, and soon after, "the division between
the southern provinces (under Spanish control) and the northern United Provinces (the basis of the modern-day Netherlands) became established" (Belgium travel guide, 2006). Throughout the centuries following the Peace of
Westphalia (1648), the country suffered through numerous wars, invasions and occupations; the pattern continued into the 20th century (Belgium travel guide, 2006). The early years of the century were a
period of social and political turmoil, but these concerns were overshadowed by World War I (Belgium travel guide, 2006). Belgium suffered greatly during the conflict, because much of the war
was fought on its soil (Belgium travel guide, 2006). The period between the wars "saw the forging of the links between Belgium, The Netherlands and Luxembourg, as well as the
emergence of the Walloon/Flemish schism within Belgium itself" (Belgium travel guide, 2006). The country was occupied by the Nazis for the duration of World War II (Belgium travel guide, 2006).
The country on the whole is a stable and "cautiously progressive ... liberal democracy" but it is still plagued by tension between the north and south (Belgium travel guide, 2006).
The north remains Protestant and Flemish-speaking, while in the south the inhabitants, known as Walloons, speak French (Belgium travel guide, 2006). Like many other European nations, Belgium has a
