employers to have potential employees with qualifications from other countrys education systems. There are several commonalities between the Spanish and the British University systems, but there are also many differences
which outnumber the similarities. Both countries have some of the oldest universities in Europe. In Spain the University of Salamanca was founded in 1218 by King Alfonso IX. Spain also
gives a high level of state support to the university system, with students not required to pay for their tuition in sate universities. The UK government also does this, but
the level of support has been falling and received a great deal of criticism with the applications of top up fees that are payable by students with extension made for
students from low income families. In Spain the students are all treated equal which may be argued as a major advantage of the system, but it also increases the financial
pressures on the system which has resulted in over crowding with larger classes. The development of the university system in Spain was closely tied to the church until the
second part of the eighteenth century (Vizcarro and Y?niz, 2004). The church lost control of most of the universities during a period of liberalising in the nineteenth century (Vizcarro and
Y?niz, 2004). The liberalisation led to the system, of public university system that is still in place today. It should be noted here that the term public should not be
confused with the UK public school education use, where public is really private as the schools are open to the public, but access is difficult and fees are very high
