all three of the short stories selected, the Southern setting forms an integral part of the delineation of the characters and the way in which the narrative develops. In addition
to being a geographical location, the concept of Southern society is something which has its own cultural values and social codes, and this element is clearly brought out in the
three stories. A central theme in the tales is the concept of the Southern lady, and whether or not this is a positive quality with regard to the way in
which Southern society is structured.
In Faulkners A Rose for Emily, for example, Emilys aristocratic bearing and the respect which the town holds for her social status certainly works to her
advantage, but not necessarily to anyone elses. The town is unable to collect the taxes which she owes, for instance, since the possibility of legal action against her is completely
negated by her simple statement I have no taxes in Jefferson. It is not so much that they are afraid of her, more that they are psychologically unable to contradict
a lady.
In the same way, when the stench of the rotting corpse starts to pervade the neighbourhood, they refuse to admit that evidence of their senses even exists, since one
