are also some distinct differences. Developed by cardiologist Dr. Arthur Agatston, who is a noted pioneer in non-invasive coronary artery imaging, the goal of the South Beach Diet is to
offer a healthy way of eating that can be maintained (Daniels, 2004). Agatston has asserted that his principal concern was not the appearance of his patients, but their health
and that he designed the diet to help prevent or reverse the plethora of heart and vascular problems that stem from obesity (Daniels, 2004). Like the Atkins Diet, the South
Beach Diet promises immediate weight loss in its initial phrase, with dieters reporting weight losses of ten, twenty and third pounds in the first few weeks (Daniels, 2004). Dr. Agatston
is a strong advocate against eating processed foods, such as white bread, white pasta and commercial baked good. These are forbidden in the first phase of the diet, which is
a feature that it shares with Atkins. As in the Atkins Diet, sugar and white flour are the enemy (Schweigert, 2003). Dr. Agatston feels that the processed carbohydrates that
make up a good deal of the American diet have been stripped of healthy fiber and essential nutrients (Daniels, 2004). But while Agatston is against processed carbs, some "good" carbohydrates
are allowed, such as whole grain bread and wild rice (Schweigert, 2003). Where the South Beach Diet differs from the Atkins is principally in regards to fat. Atkins allows loads
of fat, such as butter, bacon and fried foods. While Dr. Agatston allows fat, he advocates eating only "good" fats such as those found in nuts, olive oil and fish
