truly has a gift for pulling readers into history and life as it relates to whatever area he is presenting. In The Source Michener takes the reader into Israel and
offers a history of this Holy place, beginning with the present day and an archeologist who is sent to uncover an ancient city. The following paper summarizes Micheners book.
The Source by James Michener As mentioned in the introduction, the book begins with the archeologist who will be uncovering the city and
the history of the city in present times. This character is a Catholic, an Irishman interestingly enough and his name is Cullinane. The reader sees the man as Michener describes
him at one point, stating, "As he stood that morning on top of the tell whose secrets he must probe, he was no ordinary man, come to the Holy Land
with enthusiasm and a shovel" (Michener 13). This sets the stage for the story and further adding to the complexity of the story, in relationship to people, cultures, and religion
another individual comes in to help, and oversee the procedures for the sake of Israels interests. This man is Eliav who is a "kindly Jew with deep-set eyes" (Michener 16)
After introducing the men who will be managing the dig the story evolves as artifacts are found and the history of the site comes to life. It begins with the
ancient history involving prehistoric man as the Iron and Bronze Ages emerge and artifacts were ultimately created. One character in the Stone age was Ur, essentially a cave man. Michener
