of the Solar System is based not only on its basic components but also the physical processes which occur there. These processes and even the basic differences between the
planets, the stars, and the other components of the Earths segment of the universe are a result of the origin of the Sun and the solar system. Even before
life on earth, even before the earth, even before the universe, there was dust, gas and the vast reaches of space. This mass of dust and gas which was
floating around space was slowly pulsating, in rhythm perhaps to the forces of a supernova or some other space phenomena. According to one current scientific explanation, the universe and
its components were formed in a single cataclysmic explosion between ten and twenty million years ago. This explanation is commonly referred to as the "Big Bang". This theory has
become the central point of not only cosmogony, but also of astronomy and the current theories of the basic structure of matter and energy as well (Lerner 1991). Under
the Big Bang theory the solar system is typically described as being 4.5 billion years old. It is important to note, however, that no one theory is accepted across
the board in regard to its factuality. Theories such as that encapsulated in the "Steady State" model, a model contending that the universe has neither a beginning or an
end but has existed throughout time, have a substantial following as well. Through observation of various physical phenomena such as Einsteins theory of
relativity, the Doppler effect, the nature of light, and other phenomena; scientist are able to make hypothesis about how old the universe is and how it came to be (Fox
