it is the choice of many of Hollywood elites in addition to the younger set. In examining tattooing from sociological perspective, things become more complicated. There are theories that see
subcultural groups as more likely to utilize the process but some theoretical models support the notion that people get tattoos for personal reasons. In the end, it appears that a
good case can be made for viewing tattooing as related to group behavior but also, there are many situations where individuals buy tattoos for their own purposes. Graves (2000) remarks
that some teens get tattoos or piercings in order to rebel against parents, to be a part of a group, or to emulate people they admire. Some get a tattoo
to commemorate an important event or as a tribute to a loved one. Clearly, when a young person makes the leap, they are not thinking about how they will look
thirty years down the road when they might put on some weight and the tattoo fades. Further, tattooing is risky and can tread on health issues. It increases the chances
of contracting Hepatitis C and some individuals are allergic to the dyes. It is the riskiness of the art form, and the pain it causes, that is also attractive and
why it is so controversial. Finally, an important notion about tattooing is its permanence. The tattoo will last for the rest of ones life and so the decision is not
