workaholics. They become obsessed with work. Others do not put in a lot of hours, but they bring their work home and as a result experience a great deal of
stress and tension even on their days off. Work is something that may be seen as trivial to some, at least in the grand scheme of things. Some women kiss
their husbands goodbye in the morning as they make their way to work, not realizing how hard work is on him nor how important it may be to him. Social
life is often cultivated at work and relationships are formed. It is where extramarital affairs often start. Office romances between young singles also often culminates in marriage and family. By
and large, todays culture is centered on work life. When children grow up, parents want them to become "something," but that "something" is always related to work. The contemporary nature
of work life is such that it does take its toll. However, it can add meaning to life, and this often happens when it does not control an individual.
Richard Sennett (2000) examines the new breed of worker and the new type of corporation that is inherently more flexible. What is suggested also is that the new type of
corporation, while more flexible is nothing like what work once was. In other words, the gold watch at the end of a fifty year relationship is gone. It is replaced
by a system where workers are replaceable. In other words, workers are not there for the long haul and one can see this in a variety of industries. It seems
that what was once a business where one could expect to spend a lifetime, has turned into something that an individual will only spend five years and then move to
