would serve to expose racism and sexism in society. In analyzing the birth of MTV from three sociological perspectives it become clear that more is going on under the surface
and that MTV has had a significant impact on society. I. Introduction The MTV generation is the first to have experienced music on television. Anyone
born in the mid to late seventies and afterward would grow up watching MTV. Their older sisters and brothers were certainly tuned in and soon music would become an integral
part of the teenage years. Of course, music has always appealed to teenagers and they would have their own special brand of entertainment from Elvis Presley to the Beatles. In
1964, viewers were glued to their sets when the Beatles made an appearance on the Ed Sullivan show. But by 1981, as that scene became a faded memory, music lovers
would have a real treat. With cable television becoming all the rage, it was a perfect time to unleash a television station dedicated to the cause: Music Television or MTV.
II. The Birth of MTV MTV was born on August 1, 1981 (Friedlander and Miller 258). It is interesting that today, MTV is viewed as a
mere station amongst dozens of music channels one could access on cable or dish networks, but at the time, and it was revolutionary. The music one would listen to on
