of a Personal Experience The student has been asked here to take a personal experience and examine it, and then relate it to sociological studies. When the student is given
such an assignment, it gives him a chance to delve deeply into his psyche and explore feelings and motivations that might have been hidden, and to bring them into the
open. The student might therefore describe an experience like the following; "Jim" here is hypothetical. Jim has been overweight his entire life, and generally follows the pattern of "yo-yo" dieters:
he loses some weight, then gains it back, loses it again, gains more, and so on, and over the years hes gotten heavier and heavier. Because the weight gain has
